Historic Colorado Barn Renovation – Chapter 1: Where It All Started

Elevating a Century-Old Structure Through Custom Craftsmanship and Thoughtful Restoration

Honoring the history and character of a century-old barn that once straddled the boundary of two client-owned lots, this historic structure was carefully lifted and relocated to align with the client’s vision.

(additional significance of saving the structure here and backstory)

The move itself was a feat of precision: the barn was carefully lifted and held in the air while the moving company excavated beneath it to construct a new foundation. Originally built on a stone-and-dirt base with wood floorboards inside, the structure had deteriorated over time, particularly at the lower wall sections. Once ready to be set on its new foundation, the bottom 18 inches of the walls were carefully removed, repaired, and rebuilt to preserve the barn’s historic character.

Inside, authentic materials remain central to the design. Douglas fir floor joists on the main level will remain exposed, and much of the original fir will be repurposed for interior trim details. The barn’s original corrugated metal roof will find a new purpose as siding on the garage addition. Outside, heat-modified CVG hemlock dropboard siding and locally quarried stone will unify the rejuvenated exterior, blending historic charm with contemporary detailing.

Updated utilities will support a flexible program—including habitable space, office, garage, kitchenette, and bathroom—transforming what was once a deteriorating outbuilding into a functional, character-rich centerpiece of the property.
